No More Cakes and Ale

I reluctantly agreed to serve another term on SkySail’s Board last December.

It’s a great way to leave my condo better than I found it.

But it also feels like I’m toiling at the State Senate again.

We have 121 “voters” here who own Units.

We have 6 other Board Members whose opinions count as much as mine.

We have annual Budget deliberations.  Our voters love more spending; they hate higher assessments.

We adopt Resolutions to set policy like the one that narrowly passed in April to allow Group Pool Parties.

We have a couple of outstanding staffers:  Tina and Marvin.

We pay close attention to ethics, transparency and being responsive.

We keep an excellent website.

I’d admit that there are a couple of differences from NY:  we face hurricanes rather than floods here.  And we don’t get paid a nickel to serve on the Board.

But overall it’s déjà vue!

All Good Things Must Come To An End

Skysail has made great progress this year!

We’ve held open Board Meetings, adopted lots of basic policies, learned more about our capital expenditure needs from a Reserve Study, welcomed a new Community Manager and lots of new owners, sponsored many awesome Social events, published a helpful website with support from HOA-Express, and developed our first owner-driven Budget.

That’s tired me out! So I plan to rotate off the Board when my term ends on December 13th.

We’ll see what the future holds after I rest up.

Once More Unto The Breach

I love living at SkySail.

We moved out of “developer control” about 9 months ago. We’re like a toddler. We have a lot to learn about governance, budgets and communications.

I’ve very much enjoyed my quiet retirement. I’ve had no interest in serving yet again as a Board Member or Counsel. Nor have I been tempted to help out any local political campaigns.

But I couldn’t say “NO” to Greg and Tom when they asked me to accept an appointment to a vacant seat on our Board.

So once more unto the breach for me!

I’ve tried to get ready by completing the CAI Board Leader Certificate course.

Wish me luck!
